Cavity Removal - Portland, Oregon
New technology in cavity removal is your friend!
Allow us to introduce you to the Diagnodent and Waterlase MD lasers.
The widespread use of fluoride has made tooth structures harder and more resistant to decay. However, diagnosing cavities beneath the hard surfaces is more challenging because the disease process can start through microscopic defects in the hard surface enamel and can readily spread into the softer tooth beneath the surface.
Why traditional x-rays aren't enough
X-rays and probing with dental instruments are limited in detecting sub-surface decay, especially when the cavity is in its early stages. Fortunately, the Diagnodent laser allows us to find hidden decay before it spreads. This new technology is completely safe and pain-free, making it an ideal tool for cavity removal.
The wonders of The Diagnodent are that:
- It's FDA-approved and used to find hard-to-see cavities in areas of a tooth that our dental instruments aren't able to access or x-rays may miss.
- It shines a harmless laser beam into the tooth, providing a reading that tells us how deep the cavity really is.
- It helps locate hidden cavities before they further destroy tooth structure, which means fewer treatments and less inconvenience for our patients.

The Waterlase MD: another revolutionary tool used in cavity removal – and often without anesthetics!
The Waterlase MD is a revolutionary dental device that uses a combination of laser energy and water to perform a number of traditional dental procedures, including cavity removal.
How you benefit from the Waterlase MD
- Many procedures performed with the Waterlase MD do not require shots or anesthesia, so you can stop dreading the fear of "that" needle and relax!
- Patients typically have less bleeding, swelling, post-op discomfort and require less pain medication. What's not to like?
- The precision and accuracy of this device allows us to treat targeted areas of tooth structure and soft tissue, as well as perform cavity removal, with as little disturbance as possible.
- It leaves the surrounding areas unaffected while maintaining the structural integrity of the tooth. And believe us, your teeth can never have enough integrity!
- Studies have shown that the Waterlase MD is less invasive and less traumatic than the drill, scalpel or electrosurge . . .
- Which means you'll conserve more tooth structure and tissue – and that's a very good thing!
